Animal Monument Gets Go Ahead - 31/01/01

A stunning monument dedicated to animals killed in war is to be erected in Park Lane after receiving the planning go-ahead.

The Animals in War Memorial Fund's new design incorporates bronze animals and a curved Portland stone wall with a relief frieze. Two heavily laden mules will struggle towards a gap in the wall and a horse and a dog will stand in the adjacent garden area on the other side.

In September last year the proposals initially faced opposition from Westminster's public arts advisory panel, however the revised design has been accepted.

Animals in War Memorial Fund executive director Colonel Ronnie McCrum welcomed the decision, saying "It's a major piece of sculpture. The next stage is to raise the money".

It is hoped that the £800,000 monument will be up by the end of next year. A fundraising campaign will be launched in February.
