144 Charing Cross Road reopens - 09/05/01

Yet another venue opens in the heart of W1. The club, opposite the Velvet Rooms at (you guessed it) 144 Charring Cross Road re-opens as OneFourFour, an altogether more pleasant venue than its over-hyped predecessor, Open. One of the best nights on its roster, perhaps in the area, is Hooj Choons' Elements. After a staggeringly successful stint at Islington's Electrowerks, Elements moves westward to deliver a weekly dose of edgy deep house and tribal breaks to a diverse, 'anything goes' crowd. Elements is on every Friday from 10:00pm-6:00am. Check out www.elementslondon.com for further details.

Goldfrapp release Utopia - 08/05/01

Triumphant from their sell-out European tour, West Country duo Goldfrapp are about to release a spanking new version of 'Utopia', one of the highlights from their debut Felt Mountain, the album critics and punters alike rated as a contender for 'album of 2000'. Set for a June 4th release, the new 'genetically enriched' Utopia comes with mixes by Tom Middleton, Jori Hilkonnen and Tim Wright. 'Man of the moment' Middleton's deep house reworking is already receiving heavy support from the lofty likes of Digweed and Tenaglia. Band-members Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory-who are currently knockin'em dead on a stateside tour-return to London's Union Chapel for two sell-out dates on the 17th and 18th of May. Returns may be a possibility.

Echoboy-'Turning On' - 01/05/01

Pop maverick Richard Warren aka Echoboy releases a new single, 'Turning On', from his critically acclaimed Volume 2 album on the 7th May. The single, backed by three brand new tracks, will be followed two weeks later (May 21st) by a limited-edition remix package of the single plus exclusive mixes of tracks from Volume 2, fiddled about with by amongst others Red Snapper and orb Collaborator Thomas Fehlmann. Warren, who initially set about creating new sonic worlds above his mum's hair salon in Nottingham, has been gushingly described as both 'Springsteen meets Kraftwerk' and 'Faust via Stereolab'. Warren, fresh from remixing indie kings Starsailors 'Good Souls' single recently blew away Camden's Dingwall's on the 3rd May

'Sizzler'-Insane In The Brick Lane - 09/05/01

A collective sit round a table and come up with a plan to throw the most memorable, kick-ass party of 2001. The second part of this great scheme was that as there are four summer months, it makes perfect sense to throw four parties. The next part of the masterplan was instead of charging people to get in, it would be much more in the spirit of summer to make all four events free. The group decided to call these parties Sizzler.

This unique collaboration between Wall of Sound Records and Rizla, scheduled bang in the middle of summer, provides a stylish alternative to the foot and mouth ridden festivals at no cost to London's party people. Sizzler will take place at Brick Lane's 93 Feet East, London E2 on Friday 25th May, Friday 22nd June, Friday 27th July, and Friday 24th August. With a capacity of up to 1,000 at each event and a massive line-up including Jacque Lu Cont (pictured left), Propellerheads and Jon Carter as well as a free barbeque, the events will definitely be well attended.

A full listing of the first event on Friday 25th May is in The Main Room: Zoot Woman-live, Junior Sanchez, Dj Falcon, Medicine and Mekon. In the Bad Magic Bar: The Creators, The Plagiawrists and Dj Greenpeace, and in the We Love You Loft: Sean Rowley, The Boogie Nights and Jo-We Love You. More big names are yet to be confirmed for the other events and we'll give you more details nearer the time.

Enchanted Garden sold out - Big Chill announces second summer event

This year's Big Chill Enchanted Garden festival has sold out for the third year running, three months in advance of the event. The weekend festival in Wiltshire, which takes place over the weekend of July 20-22, was put on sale at the beginning of the year and had only just announced its first artist names.
PK Events has just announced details of its major summer event - The Big Chill Festival @ Lulw
orth Castle - which is taking place over the weekend of August 17-19 in the grounds of the castle near to the Dorset Coast. More details to follow.

Although there has been much talk of Foot and Mouth disease and its impact on the festival calendar this summer, neither The Enchanted Garden nor the forthcoming Big Chill Festival at Lulworth Castle should be affected. The organisers are quietly confident that they will run as planned. Both festivals take place in protected parkland which is not used for grazing animals, and as such doesn't fall under MAFF control. Also no incidents of Foot and Mouth have been reported in either area.
Orgainisers have been in discussion with the Department of Environmental Health and MAFF and both authorities are happy that they go ahead as long as the festivals remains "closed" (no re-admission) in order to control the movement of people within the area, and vehicles which come onto the site are cleanse beforehand.
