News: MTV and VH1 refuse multiple airing of violent Madonna video

Once again, a Madonna video has run afoul of MTV censors - this time, because of violence, not sexual content.

MTV and sister station VH1 will only air the pop superstar's new video once. ``What It Feels Like for a Girl'' will be shown once Tuesday night on each station, after a news segment about it.

"MTV and VH1 feel that the Madonna video is newsworthy and can be seen with proper context,'' a network representative said Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

She refused to detail what made the video inappropriate for multiple viewings.

Liz Rosenberg, Madonna's spokeswoman, said she believed the networks could change their minds.

"We would like VH1Aand MTV to make a very strong commitment to playing this video,'' Rosenberg told The Associated Press. "There are many other possibilities that we can explore but our first choice has always been for VH1Iand MTV to play this video, and more than once.''

The networks said the decision was final.

The video, directed by Madonna's husband, Guy Ritchie, is about Ian angry woman who goes on a crime spree. Rosenberg described the main character as a woman acting out a fantasy.

InU1990, MTV refused to air "Justify My Love'' because of its sexual content. And in 1992 it decided to show "Erotica'' only in the wee hours of the morning.

Rosenberg said if MTV and VH1 don't agree to replay the video, Madonna would seek to have it aired elsewhere. She said AOL already has agreed to make it available on the Internet.

News: Puff Daddy Acquitted

Rap star Sean "Puffy" Combs thanked God, his lawyers and his fans after being acquitted on Friday night of all gun and bribery charges stemming from a nightclub shootout.

The jury also found Combs' protégé, Jamal "Shyne" Barrow, 21, not guilty of attempted murder but convicted him of reckless endangerment and assault, while Combs' bodyguard, Anthony "Wolf" Jones, 34, was acquitted of gun possession and bribery charges.

The charged were laid following a Dec. 27, 1999 shooting at Club New York in Manhattan that left three people wounded and sent other patrons scrambling for cover. Combs, 31, declined to comment on whether the trial might prompt him to change his lifestyle.

"I'm gonna talk about all that later, right now I want to go and be with my kids," Combs said. "I'm just grateful."

Combs, one of the biggest names in hip-hop, is the owner of Bad Boy Entertainment and the Sean John Clothing line, a $400 million empire.

News: DAFT PUNK ALBUM

Daft Punk's second album "Discovery", is released this week and let's face it, no one cuts a noodle like Mr Bangalter, it must be said. Though this album lacks the catchy immediacy of "Homework", give it a couple of listens and you'll be hooked. It's those huge, muggy dancefloor tracks like "Too Long" which features Romanthony, the vocalist from "One More Time", the album's first single release, and "Verdis Quo" which sounds like it's been directly lifted form Giorgio Moroder's soundtrack to "Meanstreets", it's camp-sleazy-disco á la français all the way and nobody does it better. When you buy "Discovery", you will receive a 'credit card' with a personal club number which entitles you to membership of the Daft Club, an online area which will service you with exclusive video clips, remixes etc. This added value content means the album is ineligible for the UK charts, and in the name of 'creativity', DP's label, Virgin, have given their full support. The duo's 1997 album debut, "Homework" sold two million copies.

News: ERICSSON TEXT MESSAGING AT HOMELANDS

Worldpop has joined forces with Ericsson@homelands to offer what is apparently the world's first ever festival text messaging service for this year's festival. This SMS service will allow registered audience members to receive exclusive news, special offers, travel information and last minute updates, before, during and after the event.
Clubbers will have to register in advance via the Worldpop/Ericsson@homelands microsite and the official homelands website. Worldpop will also be setting up special terminals on 26th May to allow people to register for the service on arrival.
The event in Winchester promises over 150 live acts and DJs including Orbital, Pulp Pete Tong and Paul Van Dyk, throughout a 17 hour music marathon across 11 arenas. The organisers expect 50,000 dance fans - but will the foot and mouth outbreak threaten the proceedings?
