The Immigration Question, Have Your Say

Fancy getting into modern politics? Here’s a quick tip: back-slapping Enoch Powell is the political equivalent of retiring to the bath with a toaster. Since claiming, in a Black Country local newspaper, that ‘Enoch was right’, that Britain has changed irrevocably since it’s more liberal attitude to immigration and that we roll “out the red carpet for foreigners while leaving the locals to fend for themselves", local MP Nigel Hastilow has had the Tories turn their back on him and resigned from his local election candidacy.

But after a fortnight of shocking revelations, with 50% more migrants in the country than initially thought, and nearly half of all new jobs created since Labour came to power gone to foreigners - not forgetting Brown’s ambiguous “British jobs for British workers” statement… how are we to take Hastilow’s comments?

Have your say right here: Has Nigel Hastilow highlighted a truth about the social problems we face in Britain today? Are we living in a better or worse Britain since a more liberal attitude to immigration policy? But where have all the British builders gone? Or is this just the ‘racist underbelly’ of an unflinching Conservative party that we don’t glimpse often in our squeaky-clean climate of PR politics?

"So, is Gary saying that the brits in Spain haven't changed that country? Have you been to the south of Spain? Many of those brits abroad don't speak the language; they push up the property prices so that locals can no longer afford to play in the same field.

As for the stress that immigrant workers put on our social services - have you thought about the millions of pounds in income tax that they pay to our government? They may choose to send money home to their families - but that is their choice, what do you do with your disposable income? Perhaps I wouldn't agree with what you choose to spend it on? They pay rent, tax, buy food, pay utility bills and consume in this country, all of which points to the fact that they are indeed contributing to the wealth of this country.

They take the jobs that us sorry arse British people aren't prepared to do, and mostly work hard for the meagre wages that we pay them."

"Archie Stalin is talking complete socialist worker cobblers. The plus for mass immigration is that it enables UK companies to employ cheap labour.

The minus side to it is a list as long as your arm. The pressure on the NHS, schools, housing and the police is intense. The vast majority that these workers earn is all sent back home and not ploughed back into the UK economy.

The biggest laugh I had was the other week when a female liberal mp said on the radio 4 today programme that there was no difference to the immigrants coming to the UK and the British people all going to settle in Spain. What planet is she on, the vast majority of immigrants coming here are potless. Thats why they are coming here and not anywhere else due to our over generous welfare system.

All the immigrants moving to Spain are going in with major wealth buying appts, villa's yacts and businesses. Some of these labour and liberal mp's do need to get out more."

"I think we should be free to move where we want - I understand that people are concerned that the UK is becoming overcrowded, but if you don't like it you should move somewhere else.

Our whole economic system is been successfully built on immigrant workers who provide base rate labour for potentially 'undesirable' jobs - this isn't a new issue, as the Conservative MP pointed out.

Look at the era when the Irish came over to work on the mass development of England? How did we treat them at the time? By putting up signs such as 'no dogs and no irish'. we invite and actually actively encourage people to move to our country and do our 's**t' jobs, then abuse them for coming over here and 'taking our jobs, houses and benefits', whilst complaining that 'they can't speak the language and don't integrate' - well, to be honest if a non-english speaking immigrant comes to the country and ‘takes’ your job because they do it better than you - that doesn't say a lot for your own personal abilities - does it?

I tell you what, why don't we have a dig at single mothers again? They haven't had a flogging for a while. I despair of this country and it's tabloid fixation with finger pointing – where has our sense of social responsibility gone?"

"We live on a very small island, we cannot go on importing folk from all over the globe. It will not be long before we have to puy up the full up sign. Why do we let people in to the country who don't have a work permit and a job to go to, with sufficient money to fund themselves for at least six months. The UK has enough non employable people why import more."

"I’m no fan of Enoch Powel but he was right, in one respect immigration has changed the country. We are not the same homogenous set of Brits that we were pre mass immigration in the 50's, that is a fact.

The real debate here is how can we talk about immigration, race, identity and citizenship without the debate becoming charged and overly sensitive. When we can do that someone can say “‘Enoch was right’, well in part, a very small part right but mostly wrong. Without hell and damnation falling on their head."

"I think probably more pressing than the Immigration question in what has happened with the Tory MP is this culture of forced resignations in this country. Why does he have to resign? To save the party? What's the point, and who are these parties trying to appease? Why do 'slip-ups' (if that's what this is) always constitute resignation pressures? It runs right through our society. Appeasement isn't direction, and it certainly isn't political direction... I feel that the way this country deals with immigration is exceptional for Europe. We live, contrary to what every side will tell you, in an exceptionally tolerant society that deals well with a constantly changing society even outside the cosmopolitan capital. Still, I think that communities need time to grow and develop. If we are aiming for cohesion in our society, migrants an, as do the rest of the country - but instead communities aren't given enough time to adjust to the influx of migrant populations. This puts too much strain on communal security and the sense of community that is essential to a healthy society. It leads to social anxiety, and spawns reactionary behaviour amongst Brits and migrants..."
