Doctor Who’s new assistant unveiled - Mar 22 2007
Doctor Who’s David Tennant showed off his new assistant as the show’s executive producer confirmed there would be a fourth series.

A string of celebrities stepped out to welcome Freema Agyeman who will play the new sidekick Martha Jones in the third series with David Tennant as the Doctor.

But a question mark still looms over whether David Tennant will continue his role. Neither David nor Russell T Davies - the executive producer and one of the writers - would answer who the fourth series Doctor would be.

When asked if he would return, David said: "Do you know how many times I have been asked that question? Do you know how many times I have answered it?" then he smiled.

Speaking about his new assistant, he said: "The big story is Freema Agyeman is Martha Jones which is the big event of series three.

"Finishing one relationship is always difficult, but then you plunge right into another one, that’s what I find works best."

Freema said: "Billie (Piper) did a tremendous job. I know no-one likes change but the nature of the show is change and hopefully fans will be cool with that and give me a chance.

"There are similarities between Martha and Rose. She’s not a wall flower and there is a lovely and different relationship with her and the Doctor.

"It’s been an amazing experience. I did not know what I was auditioning for until the last minute.

"The fans outside were so warm and welcoming."

David hints at end of Doctor? - Feb 26 2007
It seems Doctor Who star David Tennant has hinted that the legendary Time Lord may be knocked off.

The 35-year-old, who reprises the role on our screens next month, is quoted by the Daily Star as saying: "People always ask me how long I’m going to play him.

"But who knows what’s going to happen. There’s something big at the end of the new series. You’ll have to see if he makes it."

It is rumoured the actor - who is the 10th person to play the part - will not return to the role of the time traveller after the next series.

Meanwhile, Hugh Grant is rumoured to be in talks to play a part in the sci-fi programme.

He has been quoted as saying: "I was actually offered the lead role a few years back. It’s only when you see it on screen that you think, ’Damn that was good - why did I say no?’

"I’m in talks about a one-off role. I’d much prefer to be a baddie. They’re much more fun to play."

Biography

Born David John McDonald to Reverend Sandy McDonald and his wife, David Tennant (his stage name, adopted because there was already a David McDonald on Equity’s books) reportedly decided he wanted to become an actor at the age of three because of his love of Doctor Who.  Educated at Ralston Primary and the Paisley Grammar School near home in Renfrewshire, he went on to further his education at Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

In the early 90s Tennant moved to London, where he lodged with comic actress Arabella Weir.  During this time he worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company, specialising in comic roles and later became a favourite of the BBC, first appearing in Taking Over The Asylum in 1994 and ten years later He Knew He Was Right, Casanova and Blackpool.  Meanwhile he began working in films, picked by Stephen Fry to appear in Bright Young Things and playing Barty Crouch Jr in Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire.

Although Tennant’s name had been put forward for the role of the ninth doctor when Doctor Who returned to our screens, Christopher Eccleston was a shoo in for the role.  However, when Eccleston, worried about being typecast, quit after just one series the Beeb went back to their original list, confirming that Tennant would be the tenth doctor in April 2005.  His first full outing as the doctor was on Christmas Day 2005 and in 2006 he was voted Best Doctor by readers of Doctor Who Magazine.  Meanwhile he was also voted one of the most influential British actors by The Stage, Sexiest Man in the Universe by The Pink Paper, Scotland’s Most Stylish Man and came 20th in New Woman’s Top 100 Men.

Although the doctor has taken up much of Tennant’s time recently, he has also found time to appear in several television dramas including The Chatterley Affair and Recovery plus trace his ancestry to Ireland in Who Do You Think You Are?

Tennant is reportedly dating actress Sophia Myles, who he met on set when she played Madame De Pompadour in an episode of Doctor Who.
