Jonny Wilkinson

  • Profession: Professional Rugby Player
  • Place/Date of Birth: Frimley, Surrey, 25 May 2020

Out of Europe - Jan 04
The absence of Slaley resident, Jonny Wilkinson due to injury didn’t help The Falcons chances in the Parker Pen Challenge Cup.

Montferrand recorded a 25-13 victory against the Falcons, who had secured a seven-point lead after the 10-3 first-leg victory. Jonny Wilkinson is recovering from a shoulder injury, and has yet to play a match for his home team after the success of the world cup. Provided he is fit enough ahead of the 6 Nations opener, his next chance of a match will be against Gloucester on Feb 7th.

Jonny isn’t the only one out of the World Cup team injured, Matt Dawson, Richard Hill and Mike Tindall are also sidelined and Phil Vickery has a rib injury.

Jonny wins over Becks - 09/12/03
A survey among women has discovered that Jonny Wilkinson is much more sexier than David Beckham...

Jonny was the number one choice topping many ladies Christmas wish lists, while ’Goldenballs’ Becks trailed behind. More than 4,500 women voted on the website handbag.com, and 74% chose our drop goal hero, with only 26% choosing Becks. Posh and Becks watch out!

The Freedom of Newcastle! - 24/11/03

Rugby World Cup winner Jonny Wilkinson is set to be given the freedom of Newcastle.

The 24-year-old Newcastle Falcons and England star has brought joy to the whole of Tyneside (and England!), with his winning drop goal in the final moments of the Rugby World Cup final against Australia. Victory was only sweetened by the fact the Aussies had spent most of the World Cup calling our England players ’boring’ and slating us at every opportunity! So no longer are we ’whinging poms’ but ’winning poms!’

Newcastle City Council leader Tony Flynn wants to propose that Jonny is awarded the Freedom of the City, and will ask for this at a council meeting on 3rd Dec. If approved, Jonny will join such previous sporting recipients as Alan Shearer and Jonathan Edwards.

Biography

Jonny Peter Wilkinson was born on 25/5/79 in Surrey, and was inspired to play rugby by his father Phil, who himself played rugby from the age of 18 to 40. Jonny was always sporty, he played both tennis and cricket for the Hampshire schools he attended before being chosen by the England rugby selectors for the English 18s Schools rugby tour of Australia in 1997. Here he clocked up a massive 94 points in only 5 games, and his career in rugby began.

Coached by Steve Bates at Lord Wandsworth College, Jonny joined Newcastle Falcons as a talented 18 year old and understudy to Rob Andrew. Five years on Jonny is considered a Falcons veteran and was appointed team captain for the 2002/03 season.

Jonny’s dedication to training is well known, even fitting in a session on Christmas Day. The hard work definitely pays off as he is one of the most accurate goal kickers in the world, which he puts down to the constant practice. Obviously there is much more to Jonny Wilkinson’s game than just his kicking ability. His legendary tackle on France’s giant Emile Ntamack is one of those rugby moments which gets endlessly replayed. While not the most prolific try-scorer, his chip kick try against the All Blacks in November 2002 was a classic.

He is already acclaimed by many as one of the world’s best fly-halves, if not the best. Jonny received an MBE in the New Years Honours List, and has surpassed mentor Rob Andrew to become England’s highest points scorer. His role in the current England team, seen by many as the best in the world, is crucial. Now Jonny is a world cup winner and was voted player of the 2003 World Cup. Glamour of a Becks like nature will surely add to his status!
